Apple Watch Series 4 tear-down: Do-able screen replacements, strong battery & more

Earlier this morning, an iFixit, publish details with teardown analysis of larger 44-mm, where the edition of cellular-equipped of the new Apple Watch Series 4.

With daring Fireball’s John Gruber which likened with Series 4 leaping in design which was brought by iPhone 4, and prompting iFixit actually call it Apple Watch’s iPhone 5 moment: “hence with a device knowing its priorities, and wanting to look elegant with inside and out.”

Hence the original Apple Watch modelled “awkwardly placed internals”, where Apple’s engineers have “really painted with the back of the fence” terming the component a layout for the new Series 4.

The Crown with a secret

Cellular Series 4 is a model no longer features a large red dot on the Digital Crown, where many people disliked. Thus with a far more subtle red ring outlined, elegant feel completely re-engineered for Digital Crown on the new Apple Watch Series 4, an electrode has a brand-new ECG function.

Series 4 has the most elaborate Digital Crown Apple’s created to date

Thus with the redesign of Crown, takes an advantage with an enhanced haptic feedback system where the wearer, a believable clicking sensation spins on it, almost with the Crown trips have mechanical notches.

A stronger battery & other tidbits

With six-per cent slimmer case and less volume, Apple Watch Series 4 packs in a 1.113 watt-hour battery (291.8 mAh at 3.81 V) which also represents a four-percent capacity increase over the 1.07 watt-hour battery which powers the previous Apple Watch Series 3.

If only Apple found a way to miniaturize the Taptic Engine.

The Taptic Engine is thinner and with a bit, long suspected having a longer haptic feedback. This is needed for a spinning wheel with a faux, afforded by the redesigned Crown.

Even this smaller engine takes up a lot of room in this tiny device room. This has gone to a bigger battery but Apple seems to feel physical feedback, very important,” is noted by iFixit. Thus Series 3 has barometric censors; Series 4 uses it with grille holes. As you know, Series 4 also rocks a thinner, about 15% larger display.

Since iFixit has a 44-mm model’s display. This covers 977-sq mm versus 740-sq mm, the same-sized Series 3 model has a 40-mm model of Apple Watch Series 4 with a span of 759-sq mm. This is in comparison to 563-sq mm on the predecessor.

The corners noticed for more of that squircle look where the side button flushes which sits in with the case.

Series 4 is a Lead I ECG: Measured voltage is between the right and left arms. This is where the battery replacement looks pretty straightforward. The Band replacement remains fast and simple with backward compatibility with previous models.

Screen replacements look difficult but are doable: The first thing to come off detaches having simple ZIF connectors. Like with previous Apple Watch processors, a new S4 chip has a system-in-package solution. This is where a tiny microcomputer with logic boards, microchips and other components crams. This is onto a single resin-protected component, a first in the smart-watch industry.

The S4 chip is secured only with screws, unlike the fiercely-glued chips of years past

iFixit, one noted with several components mounted flex cables directly to the S4 package, requires skilled micro-soldering to replace. Thus with the resin-encased housing, however, makes the most board-level repairs impossible.

Series 4 repairability

“Where the first Watch awkwardly layer, use too much glue. This is where Series 4 layout thoughtfully,” iFixit Team observed.

Series 4 near iPhone levels of repairability with iFixit says this is with a sticky display still remains a challenge. With that, battery replacement manages to make your way inside the device making the battery a replacement straightforwardly.

The architectural, aforementioned engineers improvement which prompts iFixit Team for Apple Watch Series 4. This is giving a solid 6 out of 10 on their repairability scale.
