BBC Planning A Competitor To iTunes

In a move that would surprise many, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) announced it was planning an iTunes-style downloading service that would allow viewers to get recent or archived broadcasts from a BBC online store for a fee.

Reuters reported that a software, code named Project Barcelona, would allow viewers to buy BBC programming for a “modest fee.” Nobody knows what this “modest fee” would be.

BBC Director General Mark Thompson did not specify a time of release either. Thomson said that the software will be like going into a store and buying a DVD. There are expectations that such a service would be a potential rival for iTunes and other content suppliers. Currently, many BBC programs are offered on iTunes and it is not known if BBC will stop that now.

At the moment, BBC wishes to offer this service only in UK.
