Breaking: AT&T to begin offering MMS messaging on September 25

With a short and simple press release, AT&T has officially announced that September 25 will be the day MMS messaging becomes available for iPhone 3G and 3GS users.

We know many of our iPhone customers are eager for an update on our rollout schedule for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). We’ve been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches – and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.

And yes, just as a reminder for those still sporting the original iPhone, AT&T will not be making MMS messaging available for you.

Now that we have an MMS date, lets hope they announce something in regards to tethering soon.

  1. Finally..however two things pop into mind:
    1. The good news is that MMS support will be free.
    2. The bad news is their controversial i-Phone 3G S pricing.

    In an old FAQ released by AT&T, they stated that MMS support will be provided “at no extra cost to customers with a text messaging bundle.”
    But monthly charges for AT&T’s text messaging varies depending on the number of messages you sign up for, here are two I picked out:

    * 200 messages per month: $5.00
    * Unlimited messages: $20.00

    You can also choose pay as you go on $0.20 per message – which AT&T says will be the same cost of the MMS service.
    AT&T also says that “in the future, they will offer tethering capability for iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G,”
    But as yet no price or date.

    So I guess a mixture of good news and maybe a bit of bad news..depends how you look at it.
