Court may reduce $1.05 billion damage award against Samsung

You may remember that Apple struck a huge blow to Samsung last year by winning $1.05 billion in damages by a California court ruling. Now the question arises: Will the $1.05 billion fine against Samsung Electronics be altered in any way?Screen Shot 2013-01-31 at 10.04.15 AM

Having lost a major Patent case to Apple  based on Smartphone technology, Samsung requested U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh to lower the damages amount by as much as $600 million. But Koh mostly remained silent on the request in a series of orders that were issued on Tuesday
The orders that were issued dealt with Apple’s claims that Samsung infringed upon  its technology. Koh stuck by her original decision – with one distinct exception.

She didn’t see eye to eye on the Jury’s conclusion that Samsung’s willfully infringed upon the patents, a move that will stall Apple’s call for a tripling of the damages.

Legal analysts have predicted that Koh might cut down a few million dollars here or  there while leaving the bulk of the award as it is. Whether this will indeed happen or not remains to be seen for now.

Samsung and Apple both have declined to comment.
