Developer Steven Troughton-Smith has been working with a developer called TheMudKip to add iOS application functionality to the Apple TV.
Though, the tweaking of Apple TV is in its early stages, the concept of running applications has been proven. The developers rewrote iOS Springboard, the software that powered the app launcher. This was done to enable iOS applications to run on Apple TV.
Rewriting the springboard also allowed for another new feature: side-by-side apps. This concept had been demonstrated as early as WWDC 2011 on an iPad. However, it is much more powerful and important on a device like an Apple TV.
