In a much anticipated move, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a set of guidelines for mobile phone makers and mobile app developers, in a bid to safeguard users’ privacy.Screen Shot 2013-02-04 at 12.49.23 PM

The report includes recommendations such as advising companies to obtain consumers’ consent before including location tracking in software and applications, consider designing icons with some symbol depicting the transmission of user data, and offering users a ‘Do Not Track” mechanism.

This is the latest in a series of moves by the FTC, who is looking to crack the whip on the flagrant disregard of users privacy shown by most mobile apps.

Major Smartphone platform makers like Apple and Microsoft are likely to be affected by this.
