According to Gartner, the global Android market share will surpass iPhone market share by 2011. Gartner has a great expectation from the manufacturers such as Samsung to launch many new budget Android devices in 2H10 so that it can drive Android into mass market segments and even other players such as Sony Ericsson, LG and Motorola should follow a similar strategy. He believes this trend can help Android become the top OS in North America by the end of 2010.
Not only that, Gartner even predicts that by 2014 like open-source platforms will continue to dominate more than 60 percent of the market for smartphones. For now a single-source platforms like Apple’s iOS and Research In Motion’s OS, will increase in unit terms but he states that their growth rate will be below market average and not enough to sustain share increase. Windows Phone will be relegated to sixth place behind MeeGo in Gartner’s worldwide OS ranking by 2014.
I think is bit too early for Gartner to predict so much at once.
