Unlocking iPhone is usually tricky and one method is not helpful in unlocking every iPhone. It differs from iPhone to iPhone and OS to OS.
Thus, here I tell you with a jailbreak tweak that can help you to unlock your iPhone 3GS on iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1.
Things you need:
Apart from an iPhone 3GS, you need to have two things:
1. RedSn0w 0.9.9b5 or later version. I would like to recommend you to have the most current version known as RedSn0w 0.9.9b8.
2. A working SIM Card from any carrier is needed.
Now you need to follow the procedure give below:
STEP 1 – Jailbreaking with RedSn0W and installing iPad base band
You should follow the same steps that you followed during jailbreaking via RedSn0w but with a difference. For those who are unaware, I am explaining this procedure in brief. You need to launch it, click Jailbreak, after being prompted to continue when your device is powered off, you put it on DFU mode when told to. If you are on 5.0.1, you need to manually navigate to an iOS 5.0 firmware file (not 5.0.1). RedSn0w will fail to identify the build on iOS 5.0.1. Thus, you should do this when RedSn0w fails to automatically detect an IPSW. Navigate to an iOS 5.0 file for your device instead of 5.0.1. You may need to perform a tethered boot. After doing that (if you do it), open RedSn0w again and click “Extras”. Then click “Just Boot”. After your phone performs a tethered boot, you are done.
Coming to present procedure, you should check off “Install iPad baseband” while checking “Install Cydia” as the current procedure is different from the procedure that I briefly explained for your convenience.
STEP 2 – Boot Tethered
After jailbreaking, you should do a tethered boot before unlocking. Launch RedSn0w again and click “Extras”. Check the box for “Just boot tethered right now”. There comes the DFU mode and your phone should reboot.
(i) Open Cydia and search for UltraSn0w.
(ii) Install UltraSn0w package to your iDevice.
(iii) Your phone would ask you to reboot when the installation is complete. Do it. If your phone does not ask you, then you should do it manually.
(iv) Now your iPhone 3GS is unlocked.
1. Some users have experienced their phone not obtaining service after UltraSn0w on iOS or iOS 5.0.1. If this happens in your phone, launch RedSn0w once more, choose jailbreaking again. Check “Deactivate”. Do one more tethered boot and that solves your problem.
2. Some users claim that RedSn0w 0.9.9b8 breaks GPS functionality again. However, using RedSn0w 0.9.9b7 does not have any negative impact on GPS functionality. Thus, if you experience this problem, you should try using the beta 7 version instead.
