Legacy Battle of Smartphones Took Off to Space

The battle of the smartphone has gone beyond the courtroom. On Friday, NASA’s space shuttle Atlanti was lifted off by taking two iPhones 4’s and other Samsung Nexus S with them with the intention of assisting astronauts in working out a few experiments.

The iPhones is installed with special app known as SpaceLab for iOS, iPhone app is designed with special features like accelerometer, camera, e gyro and chip to assist astronauts four experiments: Limb Tracker, Sensor Cal, State Acq, and LFI.

Lead Engineer of NASA’s Intelligent Robotics Group, D. W. Wheeler said “Through connecting a smartphone, one can immediately make SPHERES smarter. With a smartphone, the SPHERES can take pictures and video, sensors to help conduct inspections, a powerful computing unit to make calculations, and a Wi-Fi connection to transfer data in real-time to the space station and mission control”.
