A large scale project to bring rival publishers together to create a news app for iPad has hit a hitch. Powerful media group NewsCorp had announced a plan to create a news aggregator for iPad that would offer content from various publishers for a fixed fee. Now the project has been shelved indefinitely amid disagreements over editorial control and how much to charge for content.
The staff members working on the aggregator are being sent back to News International’s digital operations, which certainly does not bode well for the future of the project.
It seems strange that NewsCorp would scrap this idea so quickly after Rupert Murdoch sounded so enthusiastic just a couple of months ago. Could NewsCorp be waiting to see how the publications now charging for content on iTunes fare and how much consumers are willing to pay?
