A recently posted job opening on Apple’s careers website is hinting towards the Cupertino California-based company’s decision to continue to pursue 3D technology integration, a feature which has not yet been implemented yet.
The job opening has been listed as “Computer Vision specialist to strengthen its multi-view stereo research group.” The listing asks for a candidate with a “Ph.D. degree in a Computer Vision related field such as Mathematics, Physics or Computer Science. You should be a confident and experienced C programmer.”
The job title is currently being classified as an iOS Software Engineer and also includes requirements for the following:
“Multi-view stereo and 3D reconstruction, In painting of occluded geometry and texture data, SLAM, Mesh texturing techniques, Large scale bundle adjustment, Cameras and surfaces in a 3D environment.”
Apple is yet to include 3D technology in its products. Given the fact that both HTC and LG have included 3D cameras and passive 3D displays onto some of their Android offerings it seems obvious that Apple is making an effort to implement the technology.
It will be interesting to see what Apple comes up with the inclusion of 3D technology in the iOS devices and perhaps even the rumored HDTV “iTV.” That being said, it is likely that we would not be seeing any 3D display or 3D cameras on Apple devices anytime in the near future.
