Apple is prepared to make their Nano- Subscriber Identity Module (Nano-SIM) technology royalty-free if it becomes the standard. A new report on Foss Patents has said that.
Apple is fighting for their nano-SIM specification against the proposal from Motorola, Research In Motion (RIM) and Nokia. Foss Patents’ Florian Mueller has said that he has seen a letter from Apple to European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) that Apple is granting royalty-free licenses to any Apple patents essential to nano-SIM.
There is another important meeting of ETSI later this week that might finally take nano-SIM closer to become a reality. Apple likely plans to have nano-SIM in their next iPhone (also known as iPhone 5) scheduled for fall.
