Years ago, Orkut Büyükkökten, the Turkish founder of Orkut website had founded this social networking website to find his missing girlfriend. After finding her and reuniting with her, Büyükkökten wanted to shut down Orkut website but Google bought it from Büyükkökten and today, Büyükkökten gets paid by Google for every profile creation and Sign-In on Orkut.

Orkut gained popularity in India and Brazil and few other countries, even in an era when Facebook and MySpace were dominating the scenario of social networking in North America and Europe. However, two recent studies show that Facebook has overtaken Orkut even in India and Brazil.
