Given the excellence in the field of technology that Japan has achieved, today everything in Japan can be obtained by vending machine by just putting some money or by swiping credit card. Japan is even known as the country of vending machines. Very soon, Japan is going to witness a new kind of vending machine.
Tokyo-based beverage company Asahi Soft Drinks has unveiled a vending machine [JP] that can offer not just drinks but can also send out Wi-Fi signals within a radius of 50 meters.
The Wi-Fi will be available for free. It can be accessible with multiple devices, without registration, and for anyone to use. This means that you would not need to buy any drinks to go online through the vending machine. It is possible to use the web for about 30 minutes before your connection granted by machine expires. However, you can re-connect if you wish to.
After logging in, you will see various location-specific information on the home screen. For example, if you log in from a local store or showroom, you will see the information of that place.
Starting in 2012, Asahi aims to set up 1,000 of the vending machines in five different regions in Japan (Tokyo, Sendai, Chubu, Kinki, and Fukuoka) in the first year. Their plan is to roll out a total of 10,000 units in the next five years.
Asahi currently operates 250,000 vending machines all over Japan.
